JPF Quotes WordPress Plugin
Originally named “Joe’s Quotes”, this plugin shows your favorite random quotes along with a picture of the person saying the quote. Easily expandable to contain quotes from any person/character. Version 3 includes an options page and uses CSS for formatting.

It can look many ways as you can change the formatting, I’m using it with the default settings here.
Note: Tested with WordPress versions up to and including 2.3
Install is easy.
- Download and expand jpf_quotes.zip.
- Copy the entire jpf_quotes folder to your WordPress plugins folder.
- Enable the plugin in your WordPress Plugins admin page.
- Choose how you’d like the plugin configured on the JPF Quotes configuration page in your WordPress Options admin page.
- Add <?php jpf_quotes(); ?> to your sidebar, or wherever you’d like the quotes to appear.
The default download includes the following files for the Simpson’s Quotes package:
- Bart.gif
- Burns.gif
- Homer.gif
- Lisa.gif
- Marge.gif
- Moe.gif
- Ralph.gif
- Simpsons.txt
If you don’t want Simpon’s quotes displayed, delete these files. Adding quotes is easy. Simply download one of the expanding list of quotes packages:
- Arthur C Clarke (contributed by Ted Schober)
- Baruch Spinoza (contributed by Ted Schober)
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- George W. Bush
- Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey (contributed by Phil Scoville)
- Family Guy
- Friends
- Futurama
- How I Met Your Mother
- The King James Bible
- Lazarus Long (contributed by Ted Schober)
- Lewis Carroll (contributed by Ted Schober)
- Mark Twain
- My Name is Earl
- Seinfeld
- Spike Milligan (contributed by Brad Levin)
- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (contributed by EncGuano)
- Simpsons
- Star Trek
- Thomas Paine
- William James (contributed by Ted Schober)
- Rodger W. Hancock (contributed by Rodger W. Hancock)
Expand the zip file and copy the files into the jpf_quotes folder. That’s all their is to it. If you’d like to make your own, simply create a text file with the name of character, then a tab, then the quote text. One quote per line. Then create a picture, GIF or JPG with the exact same name as the character name in the text file. See some of the available quotes packages as an example. If you create your own, consider submitting it here so others can benefit from your efforts as well. Just e-mail it to jpfieber@gmail.com.

So Joe….
Is JPF Quotes 3.0 completely compatible with WordPress 2.1? Thanks for your help!
I haven’t played with 2.1 yet, so I’m not certain. It sounds like most incompatibilities come from database calls, which my plugin doesn’t do, so I don’t foresee any compatibility issues. If you try it out, let me know how it goes!
EncGuano has tested it on his blog and reports that it is working fine there. Thanks for trying it out!
Actually it´s just a test blog… but yes, JFP Quotes is working flawlessly on WP 2.1 (so far).
I am trying to use this plugin but I can’t seem to with wp 2.1. I have tried to follow the instructions for either the widgets or just the regular plugin but I don’t seem to have any luck. It looks funny on the page. Check it out if you please.

Spinoza being bashful, his quotes aren’t popping up.

Great plug in, it would be great to make it like a widget, I am using a widget theme and it makes it easier to insert in.
Just a thought…
Is there anyway that I could know how many times the Seinfeld package has been downloaded?
Thanks, is there a way that it can be pulled from the zip file on my site so that I can know how many times it gets downloaded?

The photo for the first name in the .txt file does not load. Whatever I plug into line 1 — that is, name plus tab stop plus quote — it makes no difference. The .gif file is not found. Everything else works fine, and thanks for the excellent work!
Hello Joe,
I am looking for a widget or a plugin that enables me to randomly change the Blog tagline, which I use for a quote. Can you tell me where to look further?
Many thanks,
Julian
Hi,
Great plug-in. However, when I view it in IE, it stretches the bounding box down to the bottom of my sidebar.
Any ideas how I can tweek the CSS so it doesn’t do this in IE. It looks great in other browsers.
Thanks
I love this little toy. Its been a great add-on to my site.
Eventhough the installation is very simple, my installation doesn’t seem to be working. After following the instructions above I get a ‘JPF Quotes’ unders ‘Options’ in the WordPress admin interface as expected however when I add to my sidebar.php file or the html of a page I get nothing in return. Am I missing something simple?
Thanks for this. Works well, but I can’t figure out where it puts the default CSS. It’s not in my stylesheet.

I love this plug-in. Thanks for developing it. I have a question though. I can’t figure out why sometimes it adds quotation marks around the quote, and sometimes it doesn’t. I went through and removed all the quotations marks from the text file it reads from thinking this would help me determine what the problem was, but it still bounces back and forth in displaying the quotation marks. Any ideas?
The only place the quotes could come from is the quotes package file (the text file in the package), unless the code for the plugin were modified.

Nice plugin…
Is it possible to have many instance ? A way (simple) to duplicate the plugin 2 or 3 times ?
thanks
I hadn’t tried that before. I just tweaked the code a bit, and you can see above, I now have two calls to the function displayed. You can’t have different options for each, but you can at least call it multiple times. If you’re interested, drop me an e-mail at jpfieber@gmail.com and I’ll send you the code to test.
Awesome Plugin…thanks…it adds a nice little touch to my Blog……
Yoinked! For my site footer!
Cheers!
Hi joe, Great plugin!! I have a question is there anyway to center the text? I tried changing to
but no luck so far. thanks

@fede: You’ll need to turn off the ‘use default css’ option in the options page, then enter the following in your style sheet:
Anyone who knows how to make the plugin work with WordPress 2.0.5?
Sorry, I mean: WordPress 2.5.1
Should work fine, this blog is 2.5.1 and you can see it’s running as billed.
Thank you, Joe. Could you give me a clou – where exactly to put the in the Sidebar?
“”
The tag, I mean…
It only supports GIF, you can change it to support JPG in the plugin file.
